A nice article describing different ways to handle transgender children.
But nothing can do more to normalize the face of transgender America than the sight of a 7-year-old (boy or girl?) with pink cheeks and a red balloon puppy in hand saying to Brandon, as one did at the conference:
“Are you transgender?”
“What’s that?” Brandon asked.
“A boy who wants to be a girl.”
“Yeah. Can I see your balloon?”
I do dislike how the article first talks about transgender people as if it fully accepts them and later on switches to calling them people with gender-identity disorder, because that is the official diagnosis. Either stick to promoting acceptance of transgender as a state-of-mind or call it by the official medical name, don’t switch sides.
If you want to set off and go develop some grand new thing, you don’t need millions of dollars of capitalization. You need enough pizza and Diet Coke to stick in your refrigerator, a cheap PC to work on and the dedication to go through with it.
The first thing I always do after having installed Windows XP is switch to the classic theme and hide all the standard desktop icons. Every time hiding the Recycle Bin icon is a chore involving Google and the registry.
Well not any more. Windows XP Professional offers a simple tool that can be used to hide this eyesore. Open the run field (flag+R on your keyboard) and type GPEDIT.MSC. Welcome to Group Policy.
Use the tree view to the left and navigate to User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Desktop and open the task called Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop. Enable this setting, refresh your desktop and the icon will be gone.
The Lone Wolf adventure books came first in this year’s German RPC Awards.
Many of the books have already been published online for free by Project Aon. This opens up opportunities for people to create great things based on the books. An example would be LoneWolfDS, Nintendo DS homebrew that will allow you to interact with the first volume of the Lone Wolf books and get a great feel of the adventure factor.
Lesbilicious made a great paraphrase stating that Julian Lewis (Tory MP) thought gay sex to be as dangerous as war. While, apparently, heterosexuals can make the call whether they are having safe sex at the age of 16 other can’t.
Text in comics has been fascinating me for a while now. Especially since I’ve begun reading an enormous amount of fan-translated manga.
As a number geek I’m happy to see there are some structured rules to the whole thing, now I just need to get the typesetters of my favourite manga to abide by them!
A great talk by Douglas Adams about wildlife, preserving the earth, and other things that become funny when he talks about it. I wonder why I never saw it before, but I know, it was because Kottke didn’t link it before.
A few weeks ago, I thought to myself, “Hey, someone should make a volume control that doesn’t go from ‘quiet’ to ‘loud’ but instead adjusts the audio from ‘whisper’ to ‘shout’.”
David Friedman decided to put this idea to the test, with some HTML5 wizardry.
I click a lot of links every day. Sometimes I keep things in my browser because I liked it. The things you find here are those items I never mark as read in my feed reader. So, this blog helps me to finally clear my tab bar and feed reader.
